The Lifeguarding program equips participants with the skills to prevent, protect against, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Our nationally accepted curriculum has been refreshed with updated tools and emphasizes active, hands-on learning. This revitalized program aligns with the most current scientific findings and best practices, validated by the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council.
Packing List
Water temperatures at indoor and outdoor sites may vary. Please come prepared with layers of full-length synthetic tops and bottoms. Be sure to bring swimwear, shoes, a towel, and a change of clothes, as students often get cold after extended time in the water. We also recommend bringing food and water to maintain your energy levels throughout the course.
The total course length is 27 hours, consisting of 6 hours of online learning and up to 21 hours of in-person instruction, including testing.
To enroll, you must be a minimum of 15 years of age. You will also need to pass the following prerequisite skills assessments:
* A continuous swim-tread-swim sequence: 150-meter swim, 2-minute water tread without using hands, followed by another 50-meter swim.
* Retrieval of a 10 lb weight from a 7-foot depth, followed by swimming 25 meters while carrying the weight on your chest without using your hands.
The ARC Lifeguard course meets the standards for pool lifeguarding. Please note that additional modules for waterfront and aquatic attractions may be required by your employer. The medical training included in this course relies on 911 access and facility-based emergency action plans.
Participants who complete the Lifeguarding certification course will be issued one of the following certifications, depending on the specific course completed. For example, participants who complete the Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid will receive a certification valid for two years.
This is an initial training course. There is no continuing education option with this course.
